From Southland to Omaha: Who from the SEC Makes the CWS?

by Braxton Parmer, Guest Writer
With the SEC Baseball regular season nearing it’s end, many fa ns are wondering which teams from the conference have the best shot at making the trip to Omaha for the College World Series. Well I’m here to tell you. Here is a brief overview and guide of who should be playing post season baseball.

West

My shoe-in is Ole Miss. They have ran completely roughshod through their schedule with a 34-11 record. This team is on fire. This could be a top five national seed. Ole Miss has a huge series this weekend down in Columbia, but when they are in Swayze Field, they are unbelievable.
Another team to watch from the division is Auburn (31-14) who is fresh off of a series sweep of arch-rival Alabama, which included an astonishing 20-5 win over Brad Bohannon’s Crimson Tide who seem to be one of the last teams in from this conference if at all. The Crimson Tide are on the verge of missing postseason play, yet again. After a strong start, the Tide’s now playing mediocre baseball.

Texas A&M seems to be in cruise control on their way to Omaha as they hold tight to a (32-12) record. Excellent series win for the Aggies this weekend against a resurgent Mississippi State Bulldog team. For State to make Omaha they need to win the Bama and Kentucky Series and steal at least one from Florida before making a little noise in Hoover. That sounds like a tall order, but the Bulldogs are getting hot at the right time.
LSU is also (probably) going to be one of the last teams in from the conference having hit a skid as of late. The Tigers can’t lose too much more.
Arkansas, from my point of view, is well on their way to TD Ameritrade in Omaha. This is one of the best teams in the country, and they have been flying under the radar.

Now, let’s talk about the SEC East.

East

A shoe-in from this division seems to be Florida (36-10) who has ran away with the Eastern Division. They are the top team in all of college baseball this year, and should be hosting some post season baseball before heading on to Omaha.
But there are other teams in the SEC East to keep an eye on this May. Vanderbilt, which is seemingly in Omaha every year, is just recently coming off a disappointing series loss to the Gamecocks. Speaking of South Carolina, who has just recently gotten its mojo back, the Gamecocks looked to be dead in the water a couple of weeks ago. But fresh off a sweep of the Bayou Bengals and a series win in Nashville, it looks like there is life in this ball team yet. Massive home series coming up for the Gamecocks this weekend as they take on the Rebels of Ole Miss.

Missouri, which is making it’s case, is a much better team at home than they are away, which is fine seeing as they only have one road series left. Georgia is a also making noise. How good is that to hear? The Dawgs have been the laughing stock of the SEC East these past few years, but it seems that things have turned around in Athens.
Kentucky has had a mediocre season for all of the preseason hype. Weren’t these guys supposed to be hosting a Super Regional? Tennessee has had a roller coaster season. They need to win their last three SEC series (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Missouri – doable) to have a shot at post season play.
Keep an eye on your television and an ear to the radio to see where these teams end up. At worst, I think three SEC teams make it to Omaha in Ole Miss, Arkansas and Florida. But there could be more… this should be fun!
