In case you live in a hole, LSU lost in the seventh overtime against Texas A&M this past weekend. It seemed like right about the same time LSU was about to finally win – something happened. At one point I started to believe my mother who claims every game in the NCAA is rigged. The madness all started with :38 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Texas A&M was down 31-24 with zero timeouts left. Kellen Mond dropped back in the pocket, but lost the football in the process. After quickly squatting down, picking up the ball, and trying to prevent a sack, he chucked the ball right towards the LSUs defender, Grant Delpit. The game should’ve ended…Coach O received a Gatorade shower. They were one snap away from their tenth win. But after reviewing the interception, it turns out Mond’s knee was down as he picked up the football.
Texas A&M got the ball back and only two seconds expired. Then Texas A&M poorly handled the clock for the next :37 seconds. Yet, somehow, Mond managed to spike the ball on the 19 yard line giving them one second left. One. More. Play. A shining moment that every football fan dreams of as a kid. The odds still looked stacked against the Aggies. LSU’s front seven had been giving Mond absolute hell, and their secondary is one of the best in the nation. Texas A&M seemed to be at a loss.
Enter Quartney Davis.
A redshirt sophomore from Houston, Tx. The young man who has had a modest season thus far. Prior to the LSU game Davis had only 36 receptions for 445 yards and 5 touchdowns. Respectable, but nothing standout. In fact, Davis was looking at another mediocre game heading into the fourth quarter – with only two receptions for 20 yards both in the first quarter.
For those who don’t believe that “clutch” should be an attribute in Madden you’re simply wrong. Davis is the definition of clutch. Down 31-24, Davis had back-to-back receptions near the last minute of the game. Then with only :15 seconds left he had another massive 20 yard gain. And when the last second ticked down, and the scoreboard read 00:00, Mond threw a laser of a ball through double coverage where Davis reached up and snagged the game-tying touchdown. It was truly a spectacle.
But it doesn’t stop there. Fast forward six and half overtimes later. Texas A&M is down 72-66. The Aggies face 3rd and 14 on the 23 yard line. Davis runs a high post route where Mond connects with him for the go-ahead touchdown.
The camera quickly zooms in on an irate (and sticky) Coach O.
Davis simply shredded an LSU secondary chalk full of NFL talent. It was a spectacle to watch. Finishing the game with 7 receptions for 101 yards and 2 of the crucial touchdowns, I officially deem Quartney Davis, the Tiger Killer.
